About the Webinar

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition defined by individual brain style differences across language/communication, social–emotional responses, interests, and sensory experiences. A person’s unique behavioral profile can impact their participation in home, educational, and community settings. Under federal law, schools must provide a free and appropriate public education for all students, as well as identify and evaluate any child who may need special education and/or related services (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, 2004).

This training will cover the legal and ethical components of a school-based ASD evaluation. Participants will differentiate between Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition Text Revision (DSM-5-TR) and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) criteria for evaluating autism, and be introduced to a best practices approach to the multidisciplinary team process for special education evaluation of autism. Participants will acquire knowledge and skills in the overall process for assessing ASDs, including selecting instruments, addressing classification issues, integrating data in the evaluation, and making appropriate recommendations for programming.
